A Winter Wellness Tea Guide for the Cold, Dark Season

As the days grow shorter and the nights stretch long, we naturally reach for warmth, comfort, and ritual. December invites us inward—into our blankets, into our breath, and yes, into our mugs. It’s the season when tea becomes more than a drink. It becomes a way to soften the edges of winter, support our bodies, and tend to our spirits.

This year, we’re embracing a Winter Wellness Tea Guide rooted in some of the most popular herbs and blends of the season: ashwagandha, turmeric, tulsi, chamomile, and lavender. These botanicals aren’t just trending—they’re timeless companions for when the cold settles in.

Herbs for Winter Wellness

Ashwagandha — The Stress-Soother

A grounding adaptogen beloved for centuries, ashwagandha is a perfect winter ally. It’s known for supporting the nervous system, easing tension, and offering a gentle sense of resilience during the bustling holiday energy.

Turmeric — The Golden Warmer

Vibrant, earthy, and anti-inflammatory, turmeric continues to shine in winter blends. Paired with spices or florals, it offers warmth from the inside out and brings a sense of comfort to cold mornings.

Tulsi (Holy Basil) — The Sacred Ally

Tulsi is cherished for its balancing qualities—calming and uplifting at once. It supports immunity, the stress response, and emotional steadiness, making it an ideal herb for the dark, slow turn of December.

Chamomile & Lavender — The Nighttime Duo

These classics are more than cozy favorites. Chamomile and lavender help soothe the digestive system, quiet busy thoughts, and invite rest—exactly what our bodies crave as winter deepens.

Functional + Cozy Blends of the Season

We’ve built our winter offerings around blends that feel like soft scarves and glowing fireplaces—supportive, grounding, gently energizing, or deeply calming depending on what you need most.

Backyard Gold | Tea Blend
from $5.99

Backyard Gold is the proprietary tea blend for the farm of the same name.

ABOUT “BACKYARD GOLD” THE FARM:
A few miles east of a sleepy little town, nestled at the base of Blue Mountains and Canyonlands, thrives my family’s farm. Backyard Gold refers to the sweet nectar of the honey bees that is the sticky backbone of our farm. You can find jars of this divine nectar at local farmer’s markets.

ABOUT “BACKYARD GOLD” THE TEA BLEND:
Backyard Gold, the green tea blend, is a Sencha green tea base with a blend of locally cultivated herbs, flowers, and spices that are formulated to target one’s *blood sugar (see necessary disclaimer). My father and myself, borderline diabetics, were the initial guinea pigs for this formula. Steadily, the local community of conscious individuals who are managing their blood sugar levels as naturally as possible have also taken part in guaging the efficacy of this tea blend.

Organic & Wildcrafted Ingredient Synergy

Organic Japanese Sencha
Rich in catechins that support metabolic balance and antioxidant defense.

Ginger Root
Enhances circulation and supports glucose metabolism.

Fennel Seed
Balances digestion and reduces sugar cravings.

Dandelion Root
Supports liver function and healthy insulin response.

Tulsi (Holy Basil)
An adaptogen that helps regulate stress-related blood sugar fluctuations.

Turmeric Root
Anti-inflammatory and supportive to metabolic pathways.

Lavender
Calming to the nervous system, reducing stress-induced glucose spikes.

Juniper Berry
Traditionally used to support pancreatic and metabolic function.

Stevia
A natural sweetener that does not raise blood sugar levels.

Synergy Insight:
This formula integrates metabolic herbs, liver support, adaptogens, and calming nervines to address blood sugar balance from both physiological and stress-mediated pathways.

STEEPING:

Backyard Gold makes a wonderful and bold hot or cold brewed tea.

  • 3-5 grams (1 Tablespoon) of tea leaves

  • 14-16 fl oz water ~185F

  • Steep 1: 3 min

  • Steep 2: water 195F for 4 min

  • Steep 3: water 203F for 5 min

This blend exudes a heady aroma of herbs and spices that follows with lightly sweet aftertaste from the stevia. Bright golden tea liquid decreases with intensity and caffeine with each steep.

Tranquilitea

Damiana • ashwagandha • chamomile

Holiday stress, long to-do lists, emotional overwhelm—Tranquilitea was blended for precisely this season.
Damiana brings the heart back into the body, ashwagandha grounds frazzled nerves, and chamomile wraps everything in a gentle exhale.
Sip in the evening, or anytime you need a moment of peace that feels like a weighted blanket.

Tranquilitea | Medicinal Blend
from $4.99

Tranquilitea is a restorative evening infusion formulated to do more than simply “relax.” This blend is built around nervine herbs — botanicals traditionally used to nourish, regulate, and gently restore the nervous system after prolonged stress.

Where many night teas sedate, this one supports.

Why Nervines?

Nervines are herbs that tone and strengthen the nervous system over time. Rather than forcing sleep, they help the body shift from a sympathetic (fight-or-flight) state into parasympathetic (rest-and-digest) ease. When taken consistently, nervines can:

  • Ease tension and mental overstimulation

  • Support emotional steadiness

  • Reduce accumulated stress load

  • Encourage deeper, more natural sleep rhythms

This is slow medicine — steady, botanical care for modern nervous systems.

Organic & Wildcrafted Ingredient Synergy

Red Rooibos
Naturally caffeine-free and mineral-rich, rooibos offers a gently sweet, grounding base.

Chamomile
A classic calming nervine that softens anxious edges and prepares the body for rest.

Rose Petals
Heart-centered and aromatic, rose brings emotional ease and subtle floral lift.

Damiana
Traditionally uplifting to the mood while relaxing to the body — balancing rather than sedating.

Spearmint
Cool and clarifying, it harmonizes the blend and supports digestion after evening meals.

Ashwagandha Root
An adaptogenic ally that supports resilience to stress and long-term nervous system repair. Its earthy depth anchors the blend.

Flavor Profile

Floral aeromatics with soft sweetness from chamomile and rose, grounded by rooibos, with a cool whisper of mint and a deep, earthy finish from ashwagandha.

Comforting without heaviness. Calming without dullness.

Ritual Suggestion

Steep 1 tablespoon per 16 oz cup in just-boiled water for 8–10 minutes. Drink warm in low light. Allow your breath to lengthen. Let the day dissolve.

Tranquilitea is an invitation to repair — one cup at a time.

Due to the relaxing effects of this tea, we do not recommend drinking this beverage and then operating a motor vehicle.

Tea as a Winter Ritual

Winter is a season of slowness, introspection, and restoration.
Tea supports all three.

Your cup can become a ritual—a pause in the day to soften your shoulders, breathe deeply, and reconnect with yourself.

A winter tea ritual might look like:

  • Lighting a candle before brewing

  • Choosing herbs that reflect the moment you’re in

  • Holding the warm mug with both hands

  • Breathing in the aroma before your first sip

  • Letting the act itself become a small daily ceremony

Whether you’re seeking immunity support, stress relief, restful sleep, or clarity of mind, your ritual can meet you there.

Rooted in Sustainability

Many of the organic herbs in these blends—especially the calming botanicals—are sourced from a small, sustainable farm in Southeast Utah. Supporting local growers means supporting ethical stewardship of the land, soil health, and harvesting practices that honor both the plants and the ecosystem they come from.

Every cup is a relationship—between us, the earth, and the people who care for these plants from seed to harvest.

Welcome to the Winter Cup

As the days shorten and the cold settles in, let your mug be a place of warmth, restoration, and intention.

This season, sip slowly. Sip deeply. Sip in a way that supports your body, your heart, and your winter rhythms.
